One in five adults have been reported to be deficient in Vitamin D, and low levels have been linked to serious health problems in later life. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which can either be ingested in food or manufactured by the body as a result of sunlight falling on the skin. Vitamin D is vital for the proper absoprtion of calcium and the use of phosphorous to form healthy bones and teeth. The department of health recommends that all adults should consider taking a vitamin D supplement, especially those whose skin has little exposure to the sun, or who always cover their skin to go outside. Previous department of health advice that those in high risk groups, including all pregnant or breast feeding women and all people over sixty five, should take a daily D3 supplement still stands.
